Peter Meyer was a great friend of Hitchens, often travelling down to the artist's house near Petworth. He bought many of his pictures having seen them in the studio in the country, although Hitchens insisted that the sales actually went through his dealers. The present work was bought originally for the Contemporary Art Society.
