    Born in Silesia to a baronial family, he entered Russian service and fought against the French in the campaigns of 1805 and 1812, promoted major general after the battle of Polotsk, and following the defeat of the Turks awarded the Imperial Military Order of St. George (1st class) and title of Count Zabalkanskii.
