The present lot is one of several works depicting typical Valencian themes that Joaquín Sorolla painted in the decade between 1889 and 1899, which he sold with great ease and which in the early part of his career served as his most important source of income. Characteristically for his work at this time, Sorolla leaves the door ajar to allow for the sun to stream into the traditional Valencian interior, acting as the principal source of light against which contrasts the brilliant colours of his palette and deftly applied brushstrokes.

When Winding the clock was catalogued by Pantorba and numbered 1444, it was dated 1902, based on a note included in family records. But whilst 1902 was the year the work was sold for 2672 pesestas, there is no doubt that the painting was painted earlier, between 1895 and 1899.

We are grateful to Blanca Pons Sorolla for confirming the authenticity of this lot and assisting in the cataloguing of this work.
