Born in Furtwagen, Kirner's father was a shoe maker. He worked in the studio of Cornelius in Munich, then his travels took him to Switzerland, Austria and Italy, where this painting was executed. In Munich he became a court painter and was made a Member of the Munich Academy in 1856.
The work of Johan Kirner can be found in the museums of Karlsruhe, Leipzig and Munich.
