When the German team arrived at Cowes in 1985 for that season's Champagne Mumm Admiral's Cup, it found itself the odds-on favourite for the series. Not only were the Germans the Cup holders as well as the holders of the previous year's equally prestigious Sardinia Cup, but they had brought with them three splendid yachts - Diva, Outsider and Rubin - with which to defend their title.

Outsider, a striking 40-footer rated at 30.2, was owned by Tilmar Hansen who put Achim Griese, a 'Star' class silver medallist, at her helm alongside Stephen Lenhert as navigator. With the five-part competition divided into three inshore races, the Channel race and another to the Fastnet, Outsider scored the highest number of points within the German trio and helped her team achieve the highest combined total for the series of 1,906 points, thus bringing them another notable victory that year.
