Hall comments in an interview with Andrew Lambirth recorded for the British Library Sound Archive: 'The way I draw is fairly physical. Since the Sixties, I've incorporated charcoal with maybe pencil or gouache. But nearly always charcoal, which has for me a great physicality. But I don't make drawings towards sculpture, I make drawings as ends in themselves. And they exist in their own space, which isn't the same space that the sculpture exists in' (A. Lambirth, Nigel Hall, Sculpture and works on Paper, London, 2008, p. 30).
