Trees are a recurrent theme in Derakshani's work. They connect one to nature, a living phenomenon, which at times resemble human figures. This is especially the case with his fig tree series.
The present work is a unique combination of a pomegranate tree flooding upward out of a sea of pomegranate seeds, topped with leaves of an ancient fig tree. The Tree of Life, the Tree of Knowledge, and the Tree of the Universe- trees have a long history of associations in ancient Persian culture. With their roots deep in the earth, a tree comes back to life from death. In Persian mythology the Tree of Life is at the centre of heaven and guarded by a lion and a wild goat. A fig tree is the most sacred, whilst a pomegranate tree represents passion and fertility.
As the artist says, "The roots of a myth are like the roots of a tree, deep in the truth of one's mind. If the tree of your life bears the fruit of knowledge, you can bring the indigo universe down to earth".
