    THE PRESENT PORTRAIT IS TRADITIONALLY IDENTIFIED AS THOMAS PELHAM OF LEWES, AND IT IS LIKELTY THAT THIS IS THE THOMAS PELHAM (C.1678-1760) WHO WAS M.P. FOR LEWES FROM 1705-1741. HIS FATHER WAS SIR NICHOLAS PELHAM, WHO MARRIED JANE HUXLEY. SIR NICHOLAS WAS THE HALF BROTHER OF SIR THOMAS PELHAM OF LAUGHTON, 1ST BARON PELHAM (SEE LOT 121).
