    Note:
Zhang Daqian was well known for his superior technique and wide-ranging subjects. Zhangs refined gongbi technique and his landscape paintings using splashed ink have always delighted a wide array of collectors. He experimented by painting on different media, ranging from silk qipao, wood board, vases to stage curtains. The present lot was painted on a thick pattern-embossed paper; the choice of his particular medium for Zhangs splashed ink painting is believed to have been a spontaneous one. The result was a sensational production - through the unique subject matter, one can see the embossed patterns on the paper through the use of richly coloured layers of splash ink. In 2006, the artists self portrait on ceramic tiles sold for a price 14 times higher than its estimate VV yet again proof of the popularity of his works.
