With the war in Europe and the Pacific and 'U.S.A. fashion on its own,' Vogue proclaimed a new era. New young American designers, forced to simplify by war shortages, gave Penn visual purity in practical clothes designed for the now active woman. American fashion and the liberated American woman had found their photographer. Penn gave drama and glamour to women's everyday activities. - Alexander Liberman
