The Kuba region of the Caucasus was not only a prolific production area of rugs in the late 19th and early 20th centuries but it also was a leader in quality pieces. Inhabited by a range settled ethnic groups, design formats vary in Kuba pieces, perhaps due to the different traditions of the peoples who wove them. This example includes elements that are very typical of good Kuba rugs such as a deep indigo field with repeating star medallions, all enclosed by various small devices and multiple borders including one with a fine and stylized running dog motif.
