In terms of composition and style, the conception of the marble offered here appears to have been inspired by the collection of antique carved marble animals in the Sala degli Animali, Museo Pio-Clementino, Rome (The Vatican Collections, loc. cit.). A selection of such works, including a group of a deer being attacked by a dog, is illustrated in the Vatican Collections exhibition catalogue from 1983 (ibid, p. 126, no. 61).
