Prosper Lecourtier (d. 1924) was a pupil of the prominent sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet and was awarded medals at the Salons of 1879, 1880 and 1902 as well as winning a bronze medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle. He is described as showing 'some of the character and sensitivity' of Frémiets best work in his modelling of this group in C. Payne, Animals in Bronze, Woodbridge, 1986, p. 213.
