    It is possible that this animal was once the upper portion of a small jade seal, and was later removed. See, for example, another white jade beast of similar size atop a jade seal, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Small Refined Articles of the Study, Hong Kong, 2009, p. 247, no. 243.
