    The domed lid and rectangular body set with 28 panels depicting scenes from the life of Christ, the interior lined with red silk, the reverse of the lid applied with a thin embossed brass plaque depicting the Papal coat-of-arms and inscribed ANNO IVBILI ROMA MDCL, the underside decorated with horn and bone lozenge panels; one panel depicting the flight out of Egypt later, the foliate mouldings partially replaced, the side and back plinth later, re-gilt, lacking key

    The carving of the panels on the body is typical of second half 15th century Flemish casket producers. This is clear from the ogee arches with brick-work above. Another casket with the same basic design as the present lot as well as the lozenge patterned black and white underside is in the collection of the Louvre Paris, cf. Daniel Gaboret-Chopin Ivoires medievaux V-XV siecle cat. no. 254, pp. 534-535.
