Listed as number 49 in Mêne's catalogue, Cheval breton was first exhibited in bronze in the Salon of 1863 (No. 2479). However, the model is frequently mistaken for Mêne's study Cheval Percheron. Surviving wax models of the artist's work currently reside in the Louvre and Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
