    The scene represented here appears to be Roman. It is related to reliefs of similar subjects such as Alessandro Algardi's Venus at the Forge of Vulcan, dated by Jennifer Montagu to the years 1635-40 (see J. Montagu, Alessandro Algardi, New Haven and London, 1985, I, pp. 197-198, fig. 232).
