    Cast seated with his right foot resting on the left knee, his right hand raised and his left holding a pearl, wearing a monastic patchwork robe fastened at the left shoulder with a floral knot suspending a ring, his face with a gentle meditative expression, lacquered overall in gilt

    Although bronze luohan figures of this type are often dated to the Ming period, the sensitivity in the modelling of the face and the treatment of the garment on the current are reminiscent of some of the figures dated to the Song/Yuan periods. Compare, for example, two gilt-bronze luohan figures sold in our New York Rooms, 21 March 2000, lot 159; and the other, 21 March 2002, lot 53.
