    SONG-MING DYNASTY, 12-15TH CENTURY

    The reclining bird carved looking to the right, its rounded body terminating in curled tail feathers, the plumage detailed with finely incised scrolling lines, its crested head with round eyes and a short beak supported by a long curved neck, the stone of a yellowish tone turning richer and darker russet towards the base

    The present piece compares closely to a carving of a bird included in the Oriental Ceramics exhibition, Jade Throughout the Ages, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1975, catalogue no. 368. Compare also another yellow jade carving of a phoenix from the Hartman Collection sold in these Rooms, 28 November 2006, lot 1441.
