Together with Cesare Lapini, Ferdinando Vichi and G. Pugi, Pietro Bazzanti was one of the main marble sculptors working in Italy at the end of the nineteenth century. Along side accomplished genre subjects such as the current lot, Bazzanti also produced copies after Antique originals as well as known works by many of the great Italian sculptors including Donatello, Giambologna and Canova.
