    An ivory set of the Eight Daoist Immortals, 19th century
    each carved standing over their respective animal and holding their attribute, including Li Tieguai with his crutch, gourd and a chimera, Zhongli Quan with his fan and a turtle, Cao Guojiu with his castanets and a fish, Zhang Guolao with his musical bamboo and a conch shell, He Xiangu with a lotus stem and a snake, Han Xiangzi with his flute and a mythical beast, Lan Caihe with a flower basket and a shell, and Lu Dongbin with a sword and an otter -- max. 2 13/16in. (7.2cm.) high, wood stands. (8)

    The Eight Immortals are all associated with longevity and are known as patrons of various trades: The leader of the Immortals, Han Zhongli (also known as Zhongli Quan) as the patron of soldiers; Cao Guojiu as the patron of actors; Zhang Guolao as the patron of artists and calligraphers; He Xiangu, as the patron of housewives; Han Xiangzi as the patron of florists; and Lu Dongbin as the patron of barbers. Lan Caihe is often shown wearing a cape made of mugworts, which are associated with prolonging life.
