Given the current owner's affinity for Edward F. Caldwell decorations (see lots 309 & 315), there is a certain probability that the present centrepiece may have been cast by the prolific American lighting firm, who supplied a modest number of revival works based on 18th century models, as well as their own ingénue designs. Caldwell most certainly filled orders for this particular model and an identical centrepiece entred into the Caldwell design records on 4 January 1905 for a member of the Guggenheim family (see illustration on opposite page).

Another example of this model, though with French attribution, was sold Sotheby's London, 15 May 1998, (£36,600).
