0 BRONZE FIGURE OF A TORCHERE-BEARING SATYR
ATTRIBUTED TO SEVERO DA RAVENNA, (ACTIVE C.1496 - C.1543), FIRST QUARTER 16TH CENTURY
Depicted striding forward and holding a torchere, formerly with a nozzle, on a modern rectangular slate base, dark brown patina with chocolate brown high points, minor chips to base
The present model of this Standing Satyr grasping a torchere with both hands is attributed to Severo da Ravenna, and would probably have formed a desk set with his Kneeling Satyr, one providing light, the other ink and possibly sand. De Winter has suggested that the iconographic source for this model might have been Mantegna's engraving of the Bacchanal with a Wine Vat (c. 1475), in which a similar figure of a revelling satyr stands to the left of the vat. Ultimately, this satyr would have originated from antique models (de Winter, op. cit., p. 115).
The present bronze model is known in a number of versions, most of them of lesser quality, and many with varying details. Although there are minor differences in the shape of the horns and the candle nozzle, in terms of model, finish and composition the present bronze relates very closely to an example attributed to Severo (illustrated in de Winter, op. cit., no. 102). Severo da Ravenna was, along with Andrea Riccio, one of the most important producers of small bronzes in Padua in the early years of the 16th century. His work was influenced by that of Riccio and he has been considered to be Riccio's most talented follower.
