A BRONZE GROUP OF THE WRESTLERS
AFTER THE ANTIQUE, FRENCH, CIRCA 1680-1700
Depicting one wrestler overcoming his opponent; on an integral rectangular naturalistic base, warm brown patina with lighter high points
The antique marble group upon which the present bronze is based was discovered in 1583 near Porta S. Giovanni, Rome. By June of that year the group had been purchased by Cardinal Ferdinando de'Medici, who was later to become Grand Duke of Tuscany, and it remains in the Tribuna of the Uffizi, Florence (Haskell and Penny, loc. cit.). Widely admired from the outset, the group was copied in a variety of materials by artists throughout Europe. The present example is notable for its beautifully finished details and superb surface.
