    A FINE AND RARE SEED PEARL EMBROIDERED SCROLL
    QING DYNASTY, EARLY 18TH CENTURY

    Exquisitely embroidered with flowering branches, lingzhi, bamboo, and various plants amid naturalistic rocks, the silk threads in tones of blue, green, russet, ochre and cream, very finely worked on a pale honey-coloured silk, the glossy satin silk threads well-used to pick out the multi-hued foliage of the plants, whilst two camellia flowers are further embellished with seed pearls and a cluster of magical lingzhi fungus has been enhanced with tiny Peking knots, mounted as a traditional scroll on pale cream paper with solid zitan wood scroll ends with the collector Cheng Lingsun's seals at each end, one reads Cheng Lingsun bo jian le, Cheng Lingsun's Wooden Scroll Ends and the other one is sui wu lu, Granted Wishes Studio, Cheng Lingsun's studio name

    This embroidered scroll once belonged to Cheng Lingsun (1888-1943) who was a well-known collector of Chinese paintings in the early 20th century. This present lot was mounted in traditional hanging scroll form on pale cream paper with solid zitan wood scroll ends and Cheng's signature seals carved at each end, which featured on important pieces in Cheng Lingsun's collection.
