The bridge depicted here was the embodiment of progress. It was the first cast iron bridge to be built and was regarded as a wonder of the age. It was started in 1778 by Abraham Darby III, the grandson of Abraham Darby I, who began the foundry at Coalbrook-dale. The bridge was opened two years before the printing of this handkerchief in 1780.
