The present watch is an extremely rare example of a French cased pink gold Rolex Datejust, furthermore it is preserved in fine original condition. Only a handful of these special pieces are known publically, it is a particularly interesting model for collectors because the dial is signed only “Perpetual Datejust” instead of the usual “Oyster Perpetual Datejust” showing that the whole watch was specially designed to be fitted into a non-oyster case. The reason for the existence of the “French case” is that in the climate of political instability during the immediate post-war period the French government forbade the buying of gold from any source except the French state, furthermore it was forbidden to import any finished articles in gold. This included watch case and so examples of both Rolex and Patek watches can be found with unsigned cases bearing French hallmarks from this period.
