Reference 5514 is one of the very few “bespoken” references: references which designate a model made exclusively for an organization. Another example is reference 5517, a submariner made for the Bristish Navy. Reference 5514 was instead made for the marine exploration agency “Comex”. However, it would appear that an extremely restricted number of 5514 were actually publicly commercialized. Whether this was a mistake on Rolex part, a way of depleting a stock they were left with, or maybe a different situation altogether, is impossible to know with certainty.
The civilian 5514 is currently believed to occur only on watches bearing serial number circa between 5’200’000 and 5’350’000. The present watch bearing serial number 5’287’315 perfectly fits in the ascertained timeframe.
