Woodcut portrait of Gabriele Simeoni on title, woodcut medallion of Diana on verso, 188 woodcuts by Bernard Salomon within ornamental borders, title to second part within historiated border and with a full-page woodcut, third part with woodcut device on title and 4 woodcut illustrations. Red morocco gilt by Lortier, gilt supralibros within blind-stamped borders, gilt spine lettering, gilt edges and turn-ins. Provenance: Leon Rattier (book label).
FIRST EDITION OF SIMEONI'S ITALIAN TRANSLATION. 'Simeoni's abridgment of the Metamorphoses begins on leaf a6v, printed in the manner of the 1557 Metamorphoses figure, with Bernard Salomon's woodcuts, captions in roman letter, Simeoni's verse legends in italic letter, and ornamental borders throughout. A medallion "Caos" and fifteen new subjects have been added to the 1557 set, and two substitutions made' (Mortimer). Adams O-508A; Mortimer French 405.
