AN EMBARRASSED WEBSTER SCRAMBLES TO PAY HIS DEBTS listing seven obligations with various strategies for payment or postponement: "This, I think we arranged to renew..." "You must see whether this note cannot be renewed for part, say 400--if crumbs can be found to pay the balance..." "If the note could rest till I come home, I should be very glad, as I have no money..." -- WEBSTER. A.L.S. to Mr. Andrews, Mansfield, Mass., 8 September 1838. 1page, 4to, remnant of integral address leaf. "I find I was probably mistaken as to the place of payment of two debts about which I wrote you. One has made its appearance here; if the other should be presented to you, whether made payable at your Bank or not, please pay it." -- WEBSTER.
