Small folio (182 x 129 mm). 21 black and white photographs (some spotting and browning). Original spiral-bound printed covers, front cover die-cut to reveal the frontispiece (some soiling, remnants of adhesive along the edges on the verso of the front cover). Provenance: "Sono" (gift inscription in Japanese from Shimozato, "Sim", on the last leaves of the first section).
FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER. ONE OF THE GREAT RARITIES OF JAPANESE PHOTOGRAPHY. One of 200 copies only, this one numbered 147. The recipient is unidentified, but the inscription suggests an elder close to the photographer. Shimozato was a member of the modernist group Shinzokei Bijutsu (The New Plastic Arts Group). His self-published book of photographs of the cactus mesembryantheum "show the twin influences of modernist abstraction and Surrealism, with the eroticism of Surrealism to the fore -- an aspect that particularly appealed to Japanese photographers" (The Photobook).
