Lot Essay

After a composition by Francesco Solimena of which at least four versions are known (N. Spinosa, 'More unpublished works by Francesco Solimena', Burlington Magazine, CXXI, 1979, p. 212). The present pastel seems to copy the picture on copper at Chatsworth after which Goupy executed a signed work in bodycolour on vellum, 280 x 368 mm., Christie's, London, 7 July 1998, lot 235.
