Lot Essay

Although it has not yet been possible definitively to link these studies to a project, the date suggests that they could be related to Schwabe's illustrations for F. Lamennais's Paroles d'un croyant, published in that year. A similar figure of a woman seen against stars appears in the vignette for Chapter XII (see J.-D. Jumeau-Lafond, Carlos Schwabe: symboliste et visionnaire, Paris, 1994, p. 140, illustrated).
