This three-panel screen is based on Ernst's painting of 1965, The Great Ignoramus (see E. Quinn, Max Ernst, Paris 1976, p.407, no.526)

In 1974, Modarco S.A. in Geneva commissioned Max Ernst to execute ninety-nine screens and forty-nine beds entitled Lit-Cage et son Paravent. Although all the screens were produced only fifteen beds were executed before the artist's death in 1976.
