At the end of the 1951 racing season, Alfa Romeo announced its intention of withdrawing from Grand Prix racing in order to devote full concentration on the mass production of road cars. In near complete secrecy, Alfa's engineers began work on an all new 12 cylinder engine of 2.5 litre capacity. Using twin overhead camshafts, dual magnetos and 12 single choke carburetors the new engine produced 285bhp at an astounding 10,000rpm!
Designed as a replacement for the Tipo 159 Alfetta, the new profect was identified internally as the Tipo 160. This all new design utilized an extremely ambitious project never went beyond the initial engine development stage. Two engines were completed and dyno tested before the project was put on permeanent hold. The engine block offered here is the second and final of the two examples completed. It is construcvted of a light aluminum-magnesium alloy tow peice casting and consists of Alfa Corse part Nos. 1.0501.10702 and 1.0507.10703. This extremely rare and important Alfa Romeo Grand Prix engine would make an interesting and welcome addition to any collection.
