Whiting Hayden, Esquire (1808-1886) was born in Wrentham, Massachusetts, the son of a farmer. He married Hannah Carpenter of Attleboro, Massachusetts in 1829 and the family moved to Willimantic, Connecticut in 1843, where he eventually played a prominent role in the town's industrial enterprises and its ultimate growth. He took part in local government at every level, and represented the Willimantic District in the State Senate. The Greeley and Brown Club that honored him with this hat was a local political party.
