    A CARVED THREE-COLOR LACQUER CIRCULAR 'NINE DRAGON' BOX AND COVER
    QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
    The top well carved with a five-clawed dragon leaping around a flaming pearl amidst swirling clouds within narrow key-fret and petal lappet borders, the rounded sides carved with two pairs of five-clawed dragons in pursuit of further flaming pearls, with two further pairs of dragons and flaming pearls above a band of rocks and waves on the sides of the box, all carved through the red and brownish-green layers to the ochre ground and between key-fret borders, the interior and base lacquered black
    11½ in. (29.2 cm.) diam.

    Compare the box of this design and size sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 27 October 2003, lot 785, which was inscribed on the base with a Qianlong mark and on the inside of the cover with the inscription, jiu long bao he, 'nine dragon treasure box'.
