The design for the service is after one of at least six medals struck in Mexico by Geronimo Antonio Gil between 1789 and 1791, to commemorate the accession of King Charles IV to the throne of Spain. The inscription on this service refers to the proclamation of the accession in Los Angeles (a city in Mexico now known as Puebla) in 1790. The milk-jug from this service is in the Mottahedeh Collection, illustrated by where the authors state that examples from three of the six known services of this type are in the Mottahedeh Collection.
