    Enamelled at the centre with the arms of Paton below the motto VIRTUS LAUDANDO CRESCIT, encircled in the well with gilt chain pattern, the border with four puce enamelled floral sprays

    Lt. John Irving was the son of an intimate friend of Sir Walter Scott, who sailed with the Franklin expedition in 1845 to find the North-West Passage (according to note on dish). For the arms, see D. S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, vol. II, 2003, p. 389.
