    MARKS INDISTINCT, POSSIBLY BELGIAN, CIRCA 1859
    Of architectural form incorporating various saints, on octagonal foot chased with diaperwork panels and the Instruments of the Passion with ropework straps and pierced band of quatrefoils, the rim of the foot with Latin inscripton dated 1859, the upper foot rim with an additional later Latin inscription dated 1908, on detatchable base, the metal centre on eight silver gilt angel supports, the central cylindrical glass container with a relic of St Albertus, together with an old wax seal (presumably a confirmation of the authenticity of the relic)

    Albertus Magnus was a Dominican priest and an influential teacher of theology at Cologne and Paris and taught St. Thomas Aquinas. He was Bishop of Regensburg and introduced Greek together with Arabic science and philosophy to medieval Europe. He was known for his wide interest in the natural sciences such as botany and theology. He was beatified in 1622 and cannonized by Pope Pius XI in 1931.
