The simple form of this brushrest belies its intricate and fluid workmanship. The graceful form and fine depiction of the flowers' petals and stamen make exceptionally fine use of the material. Compare a brushrest included in the University of Hong Kong exhibition Ming and Qing Bamboo, 2000, and illustrated by S. Kwan in the Catalogue, pls. 272-273.

The five petals of the plum blossom represent the Five Blessings of health, wealth, long life, the love of virtue and a peaceful end to one's life.
