    A FINELY CARVED 'XIZHI AND GEESE' TIANHUANG SEAL
    QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY

    Of square cross-section, finely carved in shallow relief and highlighting the natural inclusions of the stone, with a scholar and his attendant seated beneath a tree in a lakescape overlooking a pair of geese, one side incised with two characters, the carver's name Rangzhi, the base bearing the seal chop, carved in relief, Jiannan diyi jia, 'The best in Jiangnan'

    The carver of the present seal is identified as the artist Wu Xizai (1799-1870) whose zi, style name was Rangzhi, Wu obtained an official government title of Juren; and is recorded in Zhongguo Meishujia Renming Cidian, Shanghai remin meishu chubanshe, 2003, p.285.
