Lot Essay

The groups of revelling couples on the present jug are inspired by a series of prints, 'The Peasant Festival', Das Bauernfest, by Siebold Bayham, published in Nuremberg 1546/7. See David Gaimster, German Stoneware, 1200-1900, Archaeology and Cultural History, London, 1997, pp. 238-240, no. 92 for a jug from 1576 with related scenes.
