    In the core of this panel, Christ's descent into Hell and his Resurrection from the Tomb, the four Evangelists portrayed on the corners of the border that frames the central scene; surrounded by sixteen important liturgical feasts, including the Decollation of John the Baptist and the Ascent of Prophet Elijah to Heaven in addition to the usual ones; the scenes of the peripheral compartments showing popular representations of the Mother of God, for example the Burning Bush, the Smolenskaya, Vladimirskaya; also depicted are the Synaxis of the Archangels, the Mandylion and the New Testament Trinity at the top register mirrored by an extended Deisis at the bottom area; lastly, the borders of the icon portraying twelve full-length blessed figures and six half-length images of saints in medallions; the icon executed in detail with vivid colours against a dazzlingly gold background
