    Of baluster form, enamelled with the arms of Tolson above a brightly colored pheasant perched among weathered rocks, magnolia, lilies and large peony blooms, the rims with a gilt spearhead band, the finial as a Buddhistic lion

    D.S. Howard notes that this "exceptionally large" vase was made for Captain Thomas Tolson. In 1749 Captain Tolson commanded the East Indiaman Somerset at Canton and later, in 1763, acted as managing owner to the Egmont there.
