    QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)

    The box is of octagonal floral-lobed form, the upper surface of the cover is exquisitely carved to depict a landscape with distant mountains, variously interspersed with wutong, pine and willow trees, the near distance detailed with three immortals in conversation flanked by attendants bearing their attributes, all within conforming key-fret border, the rounded sides with various flowers issuing from rockwork within rectangular cartouches, reserved on a dense lotus meander ground, repaeated on the side of the box, raised on a short floral-lobed foot carved with a key-fret band, the interiors and base with black lacquer

    Lacquer boxes of this large lobed size are rare. Compare with a box of identical shape and very similar size depicting a scene of the 'hundred boys' at play sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 28 November 2006, lot 1699. The central scene is depicted on a smaller lobed box from the Estate of Dr. Ip Yee sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 19 November 1984, lot 120.
