AFTER A DESIGN BY THOMAS CHIPPENDALE, LATE 19TH EARLY 20TH CENTURY
Of bombé form, the rectangular hinged top with gadrooned edge above a blind gothic-arched frieze, enclosing a part mahogany-lined interior, the underside of the lid lined in emerald green velvet, on foliate-carved spreading feet, the metalwork apparently original, previously with divisions, the key labelled 'Mrs Tillotson, Hillside, Heaton, Bolton'

Lot Essay

The richly-carved tea-caddy relates to patterns for 'Tea Chests' published by Thomas Chippendale in his Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's and Director, 1754, plate 129. Mary Tillotson (1843-1918) was sister of William Lever, 1st Viscount Leverhulme (1851-1925) and in 1870 was married to William Frederick Tillotson.
