    Painted in 1745-55 by Étienne Liotard (Swiss, 1702-1789), the present model is based on a facsimile made by the Meissen painter Frenzel after a trip to the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden. His study was originally meant to be copied on to porcelain plaques, not to be the basis for a figure. Cf. Berling, op. cit., table 29, fig. 7 and p. 109.
