The oval white marble top surmounted by a pierced three-quarter gallery rail, above a frieze-drawer, the drop-front panel opening to reveal a gilt-tooled green leather writing surface, with a pigeon-hole above three small drawers surmounting a larger drawer, above a frieze fitted to the front with a drawer, on four square tapering feet, joined by a lower shelf with pierced gallery rail, on four cast sabots and castors

Lot Essay

This is a copy of the celebrated model attributed to Jean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806) made circa 1779, later bought by the 4th Marquess of Hertford. Lent in 1865 to the Musée Rétrospectif, in 1867 to the Petit Trianon and exhibited from 1872 to 1875 at Bethnal Green, it was listed in Lady Wallace's Bedroom in 1898. It remains nowadays in the Wallace Collection, London (F306).
