Lot Essay

See Robert E. Röntgen, The Book of Meissen, Pennsylvania, 1984, p. 305 for a discussion on the English expert Frederick Litchfield who was instrumental in identifying spurious examples 'sold in the fine manner of the original' and culminated with a law-suit in 1909 against unscrupulous London dealers. It is probable that this special commission was produced for the same Litchfield.
